Western Sphakiá. The new village of Ayia Rouméli (1.28) stands at the mouth of the Samariá Gorge, on the site of ancient Tarrha. The coastal slopes are very arid, but the mountains behind are wooded with pines and cypresses. Towering above is the dazzling white limestone peak of Zaranoképhala (2140 m). Looking NE.
